Steam Turbine

The Steamship William G. Mather repowered by Manitowoc Shipbuilding, Manitowoc WI. 1954. The high pressure turbine is on the right hand side of the picture inside the rectangular housing , the larger turbine on the left is the low pressure turbine. The reverse turbine is also on the left along with the electric turning motor.

Here is some information on how a steam turbine operates. The example used is a much more powerful turbine than the one installed on the Mather. Thanks to Richard S. Boggs and his Merchant Marine and Maritime web pages for the information.

• 5,000 shaft horsepower, normal; 5,500 maximum.
• 450 PSI Steam Pressure
• 750 degrees F. Steam Temp.
• High Pressure Turbine 7050 RPM
• Low Pressure Turbine 3786 RPM
• First Reduction gear 891.4 RPM
• Propeller Shaft 114 RPM
• Built by DeLaval Steam Turbine Company, 1952.
