Volunteer Opportunities
Do you have a love for the Great Lakes, an interest in history or a knack for carpentry? If so,
we have great opportunities aboard the William G. Mather.
Volunteers will assist with boat maintenance, serve as a deck hand or act as a docent and
provide tours to the public. All volunteers must be 18 years of age or older to apply.
Please read on for additional information on these positions. All positions are daily 10 am –

Maintenance Helper for the SS William G. Mather
- Duties: Help maintain the William G. Mather with your skills including prep work and painting, carpentry, electrical, plumbing and welding.
- Qualifications: Some restoration experiences a plus. Knowledge of all or some of the above mentioned skills.
Deck Hand for the SS William G. Mather
- Duties: General deck hand duties.
- Qualifications: Deckhands need knowledge in various maritime duties, including moorings, soundings, ballast thanks and other maritime skills.
Docent to provide tours on the SS William G. Mather
- Duties: Provide tours of the Steamship William G. Mather and history of the steel industry on Lake Erie
- Qualifications: Must be comfortable with public speaking and willing to learn the historic information and facts on the subject.
